Literacy will be incorporated into many of the subjects taught in the classroom. We will be doing lots of literacy in the morning during our calendar time, we will have a letter of the week, it is incorporated into many of the Units of Inquiry, the students will work on various literacy skills during ESL, and through other subjects and activities. Our main reading program is called Daily 5. I love the Daily 5 program I think it encourages a love of reading and writing. In the primary grades I can't think of a more important thing for the students to love and learn. At the beginning of the school year we will be doing fun literacy centers to get the students excited about school, reading, writing, and learning. I will then start integrating in the Daily 5 program slowly. For the first term the students will only be working on "Read to Self" during Daily 5 and then as the year progresses I will start introducing the other components of the Daily 5 program. Before that they will be done in centers, morning activities, and at various other times.

Components of the Daily 5 Program:
  • Read to Self (silent, individual reading)
  • Read to Someone (reading aloud with a partner)
  • Listen to Reading (using a cassette or mp3 player to assist in reading)
  • Word Work (spelling, word recognition, etc.)
  • Work on Writing (writing and grammar)

Literacy Skills You Can Work on at Home:
  • The names of letters
  • The sounds letters make
  • The Sight Word Packets (In your child's "Take Home Folder")
  • The little books that I periodically send home in a brown folder
  • Adding writing to the pictures they draw (Just have them write the sounds they hear and don't worry about perfection)
  • Read to your child every night! (Reading in English and your Mother Tongue are both GREAT!!)

This weeks sound of the week is: Putting our Alphabet Books together!! :)
